"Vegetable of Contents" is the first segment of the ninth episode of The Book of Pooh.

Synopsis[]

Rabbit is unable to tend to his garden due to his physical condition, so he calls upon Pooh and Piglet to do the work for him.

Plot[]

Rabbit searches Pooh's house for his weeding fork, eventually finding it behind a stack of honey pots on top of the fireplace. However, he knocks the pots and trips on one, spraining his toe as he crashes into Pooh's bed. He worries about his garden, so Pooh offers to look after it while Rabbit recovers, but Rabbit is concerned about being unable to show Pooh what to do. Pooh decides Rabbit should write instructions, which he does in the form of a manual and finishes the following morning. Pooh is concerned by how big it is, to which Rabbit suggests he gets help. Pooh gathers Piglet, Tigger, and Owl as Owl reads the manual. It starts by saying to protect oneself from the sun and dirt, but does not specify what to use, so they improvise with umbrellas and pillows. They check Rabbit for more pillows, who says they should skip that section of the manual while he improves it. They return to the garden as Owl reads the next chapter, which says to treat plants like a friend, so they proceed to dress them warmly and read them books. When they check Rabbit again, he tells them to ignore that part of the manual too. They then build a barrier to protect the garden from storms in accordance with the book, only for a later part to reveal that is only necessary in the event of a storm. Pooh talks to Rabbit, who is having trouble fixing his manual due to how much there is to say. Pooh explains in song how putting things in simpler words can make others understand better, so Rabbit writes a single page that has four simple steps. When Rabbit recovers after two days, he checks his garden and is pleased with how well the others took care of it. He feels bad about the original manual, but the others reveal they used it to support the scarecrow.
