There’s No Camp Like Home is the first segment of the third episode of the first season of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It originally aired on January 31, 1988.

Synopsis[]

Pooh, Tigger and Piglet are camping in the woods and Tigger goes out to get some firewood. But Piglet’s worst nightmare seems to come true when they run into a family of heffalumps.

Plot[]

One night, Piglet has a nightmare where he is chased by heffalumps and woozles. He wakes up to find Pooh and Tigger at his door inviting him to go camping with them in the forest. Piglet mentions his fear of heffalumps and woozles, but Tigger promises to protect him. After setting up the tent, Tigger goes off to a deep part of the woods to look for firewood. He falls off the edge of a cliff and lands on top of a heffalump family's log house, causing it to fall apart in the process. He mistakes the remains for firewood and brings it back to the campsite. The heffalump family returns surprised and sadden to find their house gone and go to search for it.

That night, Pooh, Tigger, and Piglet prepare a campfire where Tigger begins to tell a spooky story about heffalumps and woozles. Piglet notices Papa Heffalump hiding nearby in the bushes and runs away while Papa Heffalump recognizes the pile of firewood as his house. He fills himself with water and sprays Pooh and Tigger, then he and Mama Heffalump take their wood back. Junior Heffalump runs away after being scared of Pooh and Tigger. He runs into Piglet and they both run up a tree in an attempt to get away from each other. At the top, Piglet realizes heffalumps are not scary. Back at camp, Tigger uses a honeypot on a fishing rod to lure Papa and Mama Heffalump into a pit and retrieve the firewood, but Papa Heffalump sneezes them both out of the pit due to an allergy to deep dark pits. They land on Pooh and Tigger just as they try to get a new fire going. Tigger and Papa argue over the wood when they all hear Piglet and Junior calling for help. They arrive at the tree and Tigger and Papa climb it, but Papa Heffalump sneezes halfway up due to allergies to heights and causes them both to fall. Pooh uses Papa Heffalump’s trunk as a slingshot to send himself up to the treetop where his weight makes the branch bend down, allowing Piglet and Junior to land in Mama Heffalump’s arms. They all return to Piglet's house and roast marshmallows while Pooh, Piglet and Tigger promise to help the heffalumps fix their house in the morning.

Trivia[]

  • This episode was recorded on January 6, 1988.
  • This episode has been released in VHS, but no DVD release has been announced.
  • This episode marks the first appearance of real heffalumps. Prior to this, they had only appeared in imagination sequences.
  • The premise of this episode, in which heffalumps are not evil, just misunderstood, was later reused and expanded in the theatrically-released film Pooh's Heffalump Movie. It is important to note that some other heffalumps in the series are still portrayed as villains, most notably Heff in “The Great Honey Pot Robbery”.
  • The title is based on Judy Garland’s now-famous quote “There’s no place like home” from The Wizard of Oz.
  • It is noted that this episode marks the lowest appearance count for main characters with only three appearing, those being Pooh, Piglet and Tigger.
  • In Pooh's Heffalump Movie, heffalumps are portrayed with purple skin. In this episode however, Papa, Mama and Junior all have varying skin colors. Papa is yellow, Mama is light blue, and Junior is salmon pink. Another notable example is Heff who is red-orange and yellow.
  • This is the first episode of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh not to feature Rabbit.
  • Scenes from this episode are used in some versions of the show's opening sequence:
    • The heffalumps and woozles closing in on Piglet in his nightmare.
    • Tigger going off to get firewood.
    • Tigger searching from firewood atop a rock.
    • Tigger looks and screams.
