"Friend, In Deed" is the first segment of the second episode of the first season of The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. It originally aired on January 24, 1988.

Synopsis[]

Pooh has been borrowing too much honey from Rabbit lately. This makes Rabbit mad to the point where he says that Pooh is “eating him out of house and honey”. Desperate, Pooh and his friends try to retrieve honey from a beehive, so Rabbit won’t have to move away. Nevertheless, this proves to be a daunting task.

Plot[]

Pooh approaches Rabbit’s house in hopes of borrowing more honey, only to hear Rabbit hammering boards of wood over his door to keep Pooh out. He nonetheless gets in through the back door. When asked for honey, Rabbit claims he has no more while hiding a full pot behind his back, but Pooh sees the pot in a mirror and Rabbit begrudgingly gives it to Pooh. Later, Rabbit puts up “4Sale” signs around his house to trick Pooh into thinking he moved away so he will not visit him for honey. Eeyore notices this and inquires Rabbit on it, to which he says Pooh has "eaten me out of house and honey." When Pooh walks by, Rabbit hides back inside while Pooh sees the signs and Eeyore explains what Rabbit said. Pooh misunderstands this and thinks Rabbit has run out of honey and is afraid Pooh will stop visiting him, so he sets out to get more honey to ensure Rabbit stays.

Tigger, Piglet and Pooh make a plan where Tigger and Piglet disguise as a bee and a flower to distract the bees while Pooh climbs in the hive to get honey. The bees circle around Piglet, but tickle his nose and cause him to sneeze, which drops his and Tigger's costumes. The bees notice Pooh in the hive and send him flying. Tigger and Piglet catch him, but they all tumble into the mud.

With the help of Gopher, the group try tunneling into the tree, but are caught by the bees, who chase them through Gopher's tunnels. They flee, but are now lost, so Gopher digs a tunnel up to the surface. However, he ends up at the bottom of a lake, causing the tunnels to flood. Everyone evacuates, until the water sends everyone up the tree and gushes up like a geyser while Pooh collects honey in his pot. When the spout ends, Pooh falls into one of Gopher’s holes and travels through the pipes.

Rabbit is satisfied with his trick, but Pooh appears through his water pump. Rabbit thinks he wants to borrow more honey and stops the water, causing Pooh's honey pot to drop and break. Pooh apologizes and runs off to get more honey, leaving Rabbit stunned. That night, Rabbit sneaks into Pooh's house and leaves him a honeypot, which Pooh gives to Rabbit the next day. Rabbit acts surprised and lets Pooh eat the honey while Pooh compliments Rabbit for being a good friend.

Trivia[]

  • Recording date: 5th January 1988.
  • While Rabbit is putting up the "4Sale" signs, there is a fence, a barrel and a pipe to the left hand side of his house. When he runs inside to hide from Pooh, a line of clothes appears in their place, then it switches back when Pooh is looking at Rabbit’s house.
  • This episode marks the first instances of several things in The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh:
    • The first appearances of Eeyore, Gopher and the bees.
    • The first 11-minute episode.
    • The first episode where Christopher Robin, his mother, Birdzilla and Mr. Usher do not appear.
    • The first episode to take place entirely within the Hundred Acre Wood.
  • When Piglet is disguised as a flower, he is wearing a green jumper in place of his usual magenta one, a nod to how he appears in the books.
  • Pooh is somehow aware of jazz music.
  • This episode marks Piglet and Tigger's first interactions with Gopher in the entire Winnie the Pooh franchise.
  • Tigger has his Norwegian panting and screaming sounds.
  • The back door to the Rabbit's House isn't a burrow but a different door. So, Rabbit has three entrances to his house.
  • This door is used again in Find Her, Keep Her.
